Pinara - Mugla

Pinara - Mugla
Ancient writer Stephanus quoted Byzantion Menekrotes, “When the population of Xanthos increased very much, a group of old people established a city on the high hill of Kragos mountain and named it PINARA, which means round in its name.” He explains the establishment of the city. The fact that the upper acropolis with the ruins of the city has a really round shape gives this mythology a reality. The name of the city is read as Pinale in the Lycian inscriptions. Today, the name of the village, located near the ancient city, reminds Pinara and lives as a Minaret with a change. Strabon quotes Artemidoros and states that one of the six cities with three voting rights in the Lycian Union Assembly is Pinara. When approaching the ancient city, hundreds of rock tombs carved like a lace on the steep eastern slope of the upper acropolis attract attention. When the upper acropolis became inadequate in a short time, the lower acropolis, where transportation was easier, was opened to settlement. Although the slopes of the lower acropolis are steeply free from passageways, they were supported by the city wall in terms of both the creation of the terrace and the fortification.
